The story

The invitation did the introducing, a folk-art border of orange and ochre blooms around their two names. It was photographed on the navy jacket, next to a pocket watch on its chain, a pair of gold cufflinks and a rust-patterned tie. The other set of details was laid out on red velvet: crystal earrings, a gold bangle, an emerald ring and a wax seal.

They married at four in the afternoon on a patio strung end to end with papel picado, every banner lit from behind by strings of warm bulbs. The kiss happened on the step in front of the whole garden, and the walk back up the aisle came through a corridor of silver streamers with the bouquet held high.

Portraits carried on into the evening beside the stone fountain while the mariachi band played a few feet away, six of them in black and silver working through violins, trumpet and guitar. The family portrait took the full width of the frame, flower girls with baskets planted at the front.

Dinner was long tables under the trees, terracotta jugs of dried orange florals down the middle, menu cards and glassware set the whole length, and the lights coming on in the branches overhead.
